It’s not a woman’s only space but I wanted to tell you about the march for justice I attended in the Victorian regional city of Ballarat today. The crowd was overwhelmingly female and it seems like most of the crowd were older. Everyone seem to come together with a real feeling to fight back against sexual violence. However the second speech after the Welcome to Country was by a trans-identified male who started to speak about “inclusivity”.

For a man to take such a prominent spot at a rally for women - where we gathered to fight our sex based oppression - was deeply offensive. For us to be expected to tolerate listening to a man in these circumstances and at this type of event was offensive and disgusting. We felt this wasn’t a space for us. We felt pushed out of an arena that was for us; somewhere we should feel powerful and strong. So we left.
